THE PAINTING SCHOOL AT ANNANDALE with Celia Gullett
Applications are now open for a JULY intake for a one year course in oil painting classes with Celia Gullett. Term 1 and 2 will be undertaken in the second half of this year, on THURSDAYS and there are currently spaces available. Terms 3 and 4 will follow in February 2018 and go through to the end of June, 2018. This course is designed to familiarize students with the historical principles and techniques of painting. The central theme of the course is to investigate and understand how artists have tackled the difficulty of creating three dimensions on a flat surface. Classes will run on a Thursday from 9.30 am to 2 pm
COURSE OUTLINE: MID YEAR INTAKE 2017-2018
Term 1 - UNDERSTANDING MATERIALS AND TONE
Thursday 20th July - Thursday 14th September 2017 (9 weeks)
- Understanding tone and learning traditional methods used in underpainting systems overpainting in opaques and glazes.
- Properties of pigments
- Understanding fat over lean
- Different supports for painting
Term 2 - GROUNDS
Thursday 12th October - Thursday 7th December 2017(9 weeks)
- Traditional grounds and their purpose
- Light grounds
- Mid tone grounds
- Dark tone grounds
Term 3 - COLOUR
Thursday 1st February - Thursday 5th April 2018 (10 weeks)
- Traditional palette
- The modern palette
- Limited palette
- Colour and Tone
- Colours for flesh
Term 4 - SELF GENERATED PROJECT
Thursday 26th April - Thursday 28th June 2018
This term will be spent producing a body of work based on the student’s choice of subject. This is an opportunity for all students to put into practice a more individual approach to painting using the skills attained throughout the year, applying the new repertoire to a more personal subject.
The studio for the classes is situated in Annandale. There is a recommended materials list, which will provide students with a preferred palette, mediums and brushes. etc.
